This fact sheet is provided to help residents stay informed about how and where to recycle in this area.  As a county commissioner and a Department of Environmental Quality employee, I get notification of many recycling sites and events that I would like to share with you.    Suggestions and new information are very much appreciated.  Please use my email address or call me at the number above.  Thanks to all of you who have provided me with information.

Ingham County/Regional Special Recycling Events


Household Hazardous Waste Collection
April 5 through the end of September (closed for the season)

Every Thursday 2-6 p.m.
Ingham County Human Services Facility
free collections for Ingham County residents

Items:  pesticides, household batteries, cell phones, cleaners & polishes, flammables (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc.), wood preservatives, asphalt sealer & roofing tar, fuel oil, automotive products (brake, steering, transmission fluid - but not waste oil or antifreeze), photographic chemicals, florescent lights and ballasts, aerosols containing product (throw empties in trash,), home repair products (glue, caulk, etc), mercury thermometers & thermostats (place in zip-lock bag), small propane tanks ( 1 pound size), acids & bases (pool chemicals, toil bowl cleaners, oil pain & paint products (thinner, mineral spirits, stains -- no latex pain that can be dried out and through in trash)

Standard Item Recycling  -- convenient to Meridian Township area 
Standard items accepted include newspaper, magazines, cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic, aluminum cans, clear glass.  See below for where you can take non-standard items.

Curbside

Beginning in the summer of 2006, Meridian Township offers FREE curbside recycling through Granger Recycling.  Granger will collect your curbside recyclables every other week.  If you want this free service, you need to call Granger to sign up.  For more information, view the following document provided by Granger.

  • Hours:  Tuesday 10:00 a.m. to noon and 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
    Saturday 8:30 a.m. - noon

  • A bit of a drive, but they take some things (like boxboard--cereal boxes, etc.) that other closer centers do not take

Concrete Recycling

  • L&L Construction on Aurelius Road, south of Miller Road, north of the freeway overpass . . . you can see the operation from I-96 heading west before the Cedar St. exit.  Call 694-9979 for hours and cost.

  • Ingham County has annual electronics collections.  Call 483-4400 for information.

Household Hazardous Waste

  • Ingham County Health Department, first Thursday of the month from March through September. 
    The site is located behind the Human Services Building near Cedar and Jolly; watch for "Household Hazardous Waste Collection" signs to point you in right direction.  Transmission Fluid, Brake Fluid, Fluorescent Light Bulb Disposal, Paint Disposal, Pesticides, Insecticides, Herbicides, Fungicides, Fertilizers, Household Cleaners, Solvents, Degreasers, Adhesives, Gasoline. 

Papers

  • Office paper:  Granger Recycling Drop-off center (7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., weekdays only, bins in front of main recycling building)

Plastics

    Locations that accept plastic shopping  bags for recycling:

    The Village of Mulliken Recycling Center located at the corner of
    Main and Railroad (517) 649-8992.  Mulliken is open Mondays and
    Wednesdays from 4pm to 7pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm.

    The Sunfield Twp Recycling Center located at 126 First Street (517)
    566-8972.  Sunfield is open Mondays from 3pm to 6pm and Saturdays from
    9am to Noon.

    These are a bit far to go, but that is all I know of at the moment.  Some Walmarts and grocery stores may also take small amounts of plastic bags.

Styrofoam

Tires

    517/372-2800, charges range from $7.00 for small auto tire to $60 for large tractor tires and $160 for heavy equipment tires.   Monday - Friday, 6:30 am to 4 pm, Saturdays 8 am to noon.  Call for details.
